Winter Wonderland on a Sunday Morning

We are very slowly saying goodbye to winter. These last couple of weeks have been one cold day followed by a couple of warm sunny, birds singing kind of days. Also, the snow has changed to the not-so-cute wintery mix stuff, which is mostly half-frozen water falling down and turning the snow into mud. They call it the mud season for a reason.

However, a couple of weeks ago, right before this season’s “mixery” stuff started happening, we got to experience the most wonderful winter morning! What made this day even more special was that it was a Sunday, and what made it SUPER special was…that our little guy happened to somehow sleep past 6 am. Yes, we were sleeping in that Sunday morning.

We hadn’t looked at the weather so we had no idea of the magic going on outside the night before, but as soon as I opened my eyes and caught a glimpse of the light coming from the window and the white tips of the pine trees out in the woods, I knew I was going to see a spectacular scene when I looked outside. I had the same feeling as when I was little and every winter the first thing I would do when getting out of bed was run to the window to check if it had snowed outside. Oh, and what a happy girl I would be when that white magic blanket was there. It was always a race to see who could be the first kid out to make fresh prints in the snow.

On Sundays we like to take our sweet time with getting out of bed, even if our monkey constantly screams, “I want food” in our ears. But this time there was no time to waste inside when outside the winter wonderland was waiting. Overnight a thick layer of powdery snow had fallen, the sticky kind that clings to all the trees and makes them look frosty and yummy. The sun was also shining in between perfectly puffy white clouds painted on the bluest of skies. A little breeze was coming every once in while and blowing the snow off the trees in a spectacular way. It was the perfect winter morning to have been out there making fresh foot prints in the snow along with my two favorite guys in the world.
